We’re not going to beat around the bush: we’re tired of tuning in to every gaming presentation and seeing another dark fantasy Soulslike. Many of these games may be good, but they simply don’t excite us anymore – it feels like when practically every other indie title was a Metroidvania.
WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers at least has a gimmick: you play as an amnesiac pirate warrior during the tumultuous late stages of the Ming Dynasty. Cool. It’s here you’ll “battle against grotesque abominations, drawing on ancient lore to challenge the creeping darkness that threatens the humanity that remains”.
The game will have multiple endings and, judging by this trailer, it does at least appear to have its art direction on-point – there are some boss designs here that would make even FromSoftware proud. No matter how good the game is, though, we’re concerned this is becoming an increasingly saturated market: do Soulslike still excite you, or have you had your fill of this type of game?
Are you tired of Soulslike games? (3,409 votes)
- Yes, there are way too many
- Kind of, some variety would be nice
- No, keep them coming

I don’t mind them but the thing is with these games - they take energy, concentration and serious investment to commit to. I can’t be doing that on a rolling loop one after another. So yes … there are just far too many of them.
Now they all even start to sound like the same
It looks good but it's probably going to be hardcore. Which is fine, it's just that those games take a lot of time and effort, and I like to limit those experiences to the likes of FromSoftware.
If I played every hardcore hack n slash or Soulslike I'd just burn out.
I can see why people might be tiring of them, but for me they've been one of the best things about this gen
I'm more excited for Phantom blade zero
Oh look yet another Souls Like 😑
Can we please just get fun action games that aren't soulslikes? Is that too much to ask for?
Wu tang clan enter the 36 chambers looking good.haha.😄word up son
Just what we need, a Soulslike RPG! Now, if we could just have another Persona clone, cause there aren't enough of those either...
@tangyzesty Ok but like what Persona clones are there even? The closest i can think of is Eternights.
@Bigmanfan I heard it's really not Souls like it basically carries some aspects like that sort of like how stellar blade isn't Souls like either, but was 'branded' by gamers as soul's like because you had a manage basic things that have been inside video games since forever, counters, your health, stamina, etc. People are over using that branding for everything the moment they see any type of big monster/dark.
This deserves keeping on my potential purchase list.
Maybe enough time has passed and I'm ready for more Souls-likes. The demo for AI Limit really surprised me, and thus looks pretty sick.
@mountain_spider Unfortunately, it's not just gamers saying that. It's called a soulslike in the description of the official YouTube trailer.
Not tired of these at all because they all lately have done something that fromsoftware does, but better. Lies of P took every flaw of bloodborne and made it better, black myth did the same for Elden ring. Don’t get me wrong, flaws are different everyone. Most of the time it’s the fromsoftware jank I don’t like, the camera, the poor balancing and some very blatantly unfun boss design. These games have that too, but in a far lesser capacity.
When they start copying eachother and really getting sloppy like fromsoft kind of has, then I’ll be ready to give up.
@tangyzesty. ditto to @Deoxyr1bose question. I can't really think of any persona clones at all. (And metaphor doesn't count, it's the same studio.)
I'm always hyped for another challenging action game! However I can definitely understand the fatigue other people feel towards the genre though.
For the people who are annoyed that [Insert your favorite genre here] isn't getting shown off instead, I honestly hope that you will get to play new games that fit you better soon!
With fighting games, souls-likes, and indies popping off, this is an amazing time in gaming for me. I'm having a blast, and I'm trying to not be bothered by the people who are grumpy, and instead wish that someday they will get to enjoy gaming as much as I am right now.
@Bigmanfan You want fun action games that isn't soulslike then try these games:
😆 Came here to look for the "tired of Soulslike" comments. I don't even play any Soulslike I play the originals from From. Still haven't beaten fackin Sekiro and need to return to that fackin Consort in Shadow of the Erdtree, why would I bother with other Soulslike to add to more challenges I'm not done with...
Kinda rolled my eyes when I read about it, but actually the trailer looks really good
@TheArt I know what you mean. I’m almost to the end (I think) of Sekiro and Elden Ring is waiting for me in the backlog…
@PuppetMaster Thanks for the suggestions. A couple of those are going on the steam wishlist for sure
@Bigmanfan No problem. Oh i forgot to add Evil West.
Another soulslike game. I feel like the term souls like is being thrown around too much even for games that aren't souls like but use elements.
The trouble is. I am rubbish at souls likes and prefer to play normal non souls like.
So when I read the word souls like I just stop reading. The problem with that is I'm probably missing out on games that really aren't souls like games.
I feel lost this gen as I'm not finding games for my taste.
I'm a single player gamer. I just don't know what to play anymore 🤷
Well seeing as I'm a total souls type game aficionado and can't get enough of them I'll always read these articles. What gets me is the amount of people who don't like these games or are getting bored of them clicking on the article to read just so they can tell the world how much disdain they have stored up. Everybody's entitled to their opinion but I just don't understand why you bother to take the time to read and comment about something you know you are not going to be into. I'd rather read comments from the gamers that these type of games are aimed at. I've liked the look of this from the first reveal and I'll be buying it in all likelihood. Bring on more of these arpg's as they are my cuppa.
It looked good, I’ll be playing it on GPU so it’s no added financial cost.
I enjoy souls types but there’s too many that have jumped on the trend. There needs to be a healthy mix of Souls/GoW/DMC type games and we don’t seem to be getting that.
Companies are going to start seeing player fatigue on them soon and the ‘average’ releases are going to start being affected in sales. (A la Ubisoft as an example)
I know one is Japanese and the other Chinese and they only have one shared word in the titles, but Wuchang: Fallen Feathers and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty both being really similar games feels a bit unfortunate. Wuchang almost looks like Nioh 3 and Wo Long, well, basically is Nioh 3.
And let's not forget about Wukong.
It's in pretty poor taste how every other similar game in recent times has gotten its fair shake, yet somehow everyone's decided that this one specifically gets to be the universal punching bag for people who are "tired" with the subgenre. This whole narrative feels manufactured and ill-willed, and PS actively enhancing it is pretty unprofessional.
And it's all the more annoying because the project looks high effort and it's been known about for a while. The likes of Wukong and Phantom Blade Zero get their praises sung at every opportunity, but now Wuchang comes back with another trailer after months since its reveal and suddenly it's all about soulslike burnout? Gross behavior.
FINALLY just beat Sekiro last night so I’m all for some Soulslike news. This look like it could be fun. Sign me up 😎
It looks like an awesome sequel of Wolong or Nioh, but it doesn’t really matter, will be definitely a day one for me.
I mean, c’mon, this looks fantastic. More like a Nioh-like anyways… All these new developers want to take a crack at their favorite genre, challenging action-RPGs, and that is O-Kay with me!
@Gaia093
Perhaps if it was trailed during a PS event (and not Xbox), it may have not got the "punching bag" treatment...
@GeeForce How would that even matter to anyone who isn't a rabid fanboy, given that it's a multiplatform title anyway?
Just once I would like the combat to be like ninja gaidan
Looks really cool.
No, I'm not tired of Soulslikes, but I'm definitely tired of annoying inserted opinions in articles that have nothing to do with reviews, all of them made by the same guy that complains and whine about everything
@Gaia093
Yes, I'm sure it's purely coincidental that the straw that broke the camels back was this one.
If it had been a PS exclusive for example, the article would have been identical.
There’s always room for a good game. Unless it’s another annualized sports game. Or another COD style military FPS. Or another live service hero shooter. Or another 2D Metroidvania….
😜
@Deoxyr1bose okay my bad, not Persona clones exactly I suppose, just remakes and remasters and spinoffs of every Persona game ever, at least what it seems like from my point of view.
@Bagwag82 I agree with everything you said
I've lost all interest in FPS's because or 3rd person Souls-like games because I don't find running and shooting fun anymore and melee in FPS's feels so limited. However, fatigue is starting to occur for these games and I'm curious what the next breakthrough will be to really rejuvenate the genre.
Need more game like Devil may Cry.
The volume of people complaining about too many soulslikes is way higher than the actual amount of soulslikes.
@PCPS4XB phantom blade zero is more devil may cry then souls like.
It's not a question of how many soul likes are on the market, whats important is how many high quality soul likes are on the market, I'll always play something as good as Stellar Blade, lies of P or Wukong.
Yeh I'm burn out on souls, after playing for a decade. Even Black Myth Wukong, which I dined on the hype of for years, has me bored after 25hrs and then I think ahead to another 20 to complete the game and feel... fatigue.
@mountain_spider Stellar Blade didn't even had stamina.
I know it may be not a big thing, but I like the angle, from where the camera is placed.
Not so common, to my knowledge.
And the game seems good, yeah.
@Dalamar I know, but she had shield management plus if you look around practically ever review calls it souls like.
I love Fromsoft games. But if I see something else labelled as soulslike I immediately lose interest.
@twitchtvpat yes I agree!
